The Yellow Kid by R. F. Outcault is considered to be the first
modern comic strip. The Yellow Kid, know also as Mickey Dougin, was an Irish
immigrant living in the Lower East Side slums of New York. This street-wise
urchin and his pals from Hogan's Alley took the whole country by storm at the
end of the nineteenth century. Their rowdy and rambunctious adventures both
entertained and delivered searing social commentary. Hugely popular, The Yellow
Kid's smiling face and yellow nightshirt soon appeared across the nation - in
Vaudeville, magazines, toys, and all kinds of household products.
