To celebrate Broadsword's publishing anniversary, and the environmental message of Tarot Witch Of The Black Rose #65, Publisher/Writer/Artist Jim Balent gives an exclusive interview to share his thoughts on the success of Broadsword, what it means for the fans, and how he and Holly will approach future endeavors in the comics business.
PREVIEWSworld (PW): From your perspective, how has the industry changed and evolved over the last ten years? How do you see those changes reflected in the book and in your work?
Jim Balent (JB): In the last ten years I have seen independent comic book companies prosper and fold. I have seen comic stores open and close. I have seen printing companies down size. I've also seen incredible strides in the stories and art in comic books. I am still inspired by the work that other artists and writers have produced. As the art form of comic books evolve, it is only wise as a company and as an artist to evolve with them.
(PW): What advice would you give to an independent publisher who’s just getting started today?
(JB): Stick to your vision, respect your readers, and get your book in on time.
(PW): Anyone’s who had the opportunity to meet you guys at a show knows you have a great fan dynamic. What are your keys to a happy, loyal fan base?
(JB): We respect our readers. We wouldn't be around if it wasn't for them. Our readers are very intelligent people and they expect a high quality experience from us. And we give it to them. They know we don't water down our comic to make it more PC. They know when they pick up an issue of Tarot they are getting something that is very entertaining and unique. They see the hard work that goes into each page and Holly and I do our best to give them that comic they expect and desire. And on top of that, in the last ten years we have always published on time. Readers want their books and they want to know when their next issue will come out. If you don't keep to a regular publishing schedule, those readers will go away.

(PW): What are some of your favorite Broadsword projects and moments from the last decade?
(JB): There are so many. In the past ten years Tarot has won numerous awards. Soldiers have brought our comic to the frontlines of Iraq and Afghanistan. Rock stars have told me how much they liked my work. Readers have cosplayed our characters. We have been invited all over the world to appear at conventions, dinners, and weddings. We feel very honored that our work has made so many friends.

(PW): Where do you see Broadsword in another ten years?
(JB): As I mentioned in the beginning. The comic book world is constantly changing. One has to adapt. Holly and I do have long term plans for Broadsword but we also know that the short term plan, producing each issue the best we can, is always our number one goal. Those of you who have stayed with us for the last ten years , we thank you. Those of you who just joined us, we welcome you. You are in for one magickal ride.
