Ever since the earth became inhospitable, planetary garbage men like Travis have been tasked with cleaning up mountains of toxic waste to create a "Clear World." But what happens when the garbage men disappear into one of those heaping piles?
In the following interview, creator Stefano Cardoselli (Space Cadet, Planet Caravan) takes you beyond the muck and shows you the beauty of the artistic process behind Don't Spit in the Wind from Mad Cave Studios.
PREVIEWSworld: Firstly, what is your name and where do you hail from?
Stefano Cardoselli: My name is Stefano Cardoselli. I live in Tuscany in Italy and I have been working with comics for around 22 years.
PREVIEWSworld: How did you get into comic books as a fan?
Stefano Cardoselli: When I was a child I drew everywhere and on any surface.
The first comic I read was Spider-Man by Steve Ditko. Then through a cousin of mine, I got to know Metal Hurlant and Heavy Metal Magazine and I was completely fascinated by them. Growing up I discovered other authors such as Moebius, Geof Darrow, Frank Miller, and many others.
PREVIEWSworld: What can you tell us about Don't Spit in the Wind? What is it about?
Stefano Cardoselli: “One man's trash is another man's living.”
Since earth became inhospitable, humanity escaped ages ago to live in a space station floating above the atmosphere. Now Travis and his crew of garbage men are tasked with cleaning up mountains of toxic waste, working for a company called Atomic Bros INC., to create a "Clear World." But when one of Travis' crew members goes missing near an old nuclear facility Travis' job becomes a bit more complicated.
PREVIEWSworld: Tell us about your design process a bit. How did you go about designing the world and characters of Don't Spit in the Wind?
Stefano Cardoselli: It's always fun to start creating characters in a story. I thought of these huge overalls, a little clumsy and slow but also totally colorful and obviously full of all kinds of details.
For the characters, I tried to represent everyday men doing a job, so there are no heroes in this story, there are just ordinary men and women in a ruined world.
PREVIEWSworld: What tools do you use to draw?
Stefano Cardoselli: Pencils, markers, and paper. Really old-school
PREVIEWSworld: In terms of audience, who is Don't Spit in the Wind for?
Stefano Cardoselli: I’d say Don’t Spit in the Wind can be enjoyed by anyone with the exception of children as there are some violent situations.
