Introducing... 'Rougarou' From Uncharted Wilderness Studios
Sep 27, 2022
Rougarou, the supernatural horror / western from Uncharted Wilderness Studios will be in stores September 28th, just in time for the Halloween season.
Set in the mid 1800s, just after the U.S. Civil War, the story begins on a Colorado ranch where a young girl is attacked by a mysterious creature in the dead of night. The next morning a U.S. Marshal arrives and recounts the tale of the Rougarou, a beast that he has been tracking across the country but is always one step behind. Now, what began as one man’s mission of vengeance, will lead to a showdown that no one could have predicted.
Rougarou is an historical epic stretching from the fields of Savannah, Georgia to the mountains of Colorado. The story is the brainchild of writer, filmmaker, and horror aficionado Giles Clarke who was influenced by his love of history and travels across the country while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.
“The original inspiration came when I lived near Savannah, Georgia and first learned about the rougarou in Cajun folklore”, said Clarke, “Savannah is an incredibly atmospheric town (especially at night), and that ambiance helped shape the feel of the story years later.”
“After several cross-country drives witnessing the shifting landscape of the United States, I realized that it provided the perfect canvas for the hunt between the Marshal and the Rougarou.”
Rougarou seamlessly blends superstition and folklore of North America into an action-packed adventure set against the backdrop of American history. The entire book transports the reader into that time period, with even the most minor details presented with authenticity.
“We really focused on researching everything in this book to give it an accurate look and feel of the time period”, explained Clarke, “Going into production, we had a reference deck of historical photos of every location, character, item of clothing, prop, and weapon. Anything that was going on the page was in that deck.”
Rougarou is a fully contained story but leaves the door open for future anthologies. “I wanted this story to stand on its own and leave readers feeling that they had just gone on this epic adventure. I did not want them to feel like they needed to wait for subsequent issues to get the full story.”
With incredible line art from Jose Rondon, atmospheric coloring by Felipe Obando, engaging lettering by AndWorld Design Studio, and a captivating logo by Zack Ketz, Rougarou will be a hit with both history and horror lovers alike, and should definitely be on your Halloween reading list this year.
