Flashback Friday: Adept, Strikeforce’s Quick Thinker

by Amanda Sherriff

Jelene Anderson, who would become Adept, was a devout Christian living a normal life in the year 2073 when creators Peter B. Gillis and Brent Anderson introduced her in Strikeforce: Morituri #1. She was tested for the Morituri process and found compatible. She underwent the process, which gave regular humans superpowers, since she considered it her duty to help protect the planet from the ongoing war with the alien Horde. The price of the powers, however, was that recipients would only live for one year because the body couldn’t sustain the powers in the long-term.

Jelene became one of the first generation volunteers to Strikeforce: Morituri. She and her teammates went to the Biowar Facility Alpha were they were put into extremely stressful situations so that their powers would manifest. Jelene nearly died in a cage with venomous snakes until her powers surfaced, which included the ability to analyze situations and produce the right solution to solve it. While trapped in the cage, she chemically produced the antidote to the snakes’ venom and created a mechanism to free herself.

As Adept, she was a vital member of the team, though she needed time to process a situation to provide a solution. The Horde infected a small town with a living organism that caused skin to grow over peoples’ eyes, nose, and mouth. When the team was sent to investigate Adept was afflicted with the living organism. To counteract it she chemically produced the antidote to save herself and the town.

When the team was sent to infiltrate a Horde mothership, Adept found a storage area and was able to catalogue many of the items in her head. Once back on Earth, the world government leaders considered her knowledge invaluable, so she was tasked with analyzing the data.

Later after a field mission, Adept’s powers went into overdrive, and she began rapidly processing and explaining technical information from the Horde’s artifacts. She briefly regained her normal thought process and clarity, and knowing that the power surge was leading to her death, she thanked God for her life. The team recorded her analysis until the Morituri effect killed her.
