Space Travel & Tracking with Dawnstar
Apr 27, 2021
DC superheroine Dawnstar has powers that make her indispensable when it comes to finding those who are lost and navigating through space. A member of the Legion of Super-Heroes in the 30th and 31st centuries, Dawnstar can fly, track life forms and objects across light years, and survive for long periods in space without a suit by creating her own environmental forcefield.
Dawnstar is from the planet Starhaven, a worldpopulated by Native Americans who had been abducted by aliens in the 1200s. She is a member of the Anasazi heritage. Introduced in Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #226 (April 1977), she was created by Paul Levitz and Mike Grell.
When she was a child, Dawnstar used her abilities to guide ships through hazardous areas of space. Catching the attention of Legion financier R.J. Brande, she was invited to attend the Legion Academy. Because of her navigational and tracking powers, Dawnstar became a full member of the Legion on her first outing with the team. Her missions with the Legion were often focused on tracking members who were missing and using her ability to fly at high speeds to rescue them.
Dawnstar had a romance, albeit a tragic one, with fellow Legionnaire Wildfire. Similarly strong-willed and outspoken, they challenged each other to use their abilities as best they could for the team. But, Wildfire was turned into an anti-energy being without a physical body, robbing them of a physical relationship.
The Legion’s timeline was reset following a battle with Mordru and Dawnstar was possessed by the evil entity, Bounty. Her wings were cut off and she was forced to become an assassin. She was freed from Bounty’s control and healed from the ordeal, but then the Legion’s timeline was erased in Zero Hour.
Since then, Dawnstar was briefly in the Legion of Super-Heroes Vol. 5, was in Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds, and was in the New 52 Legions Lost series that saw members of the Legion stuck in the 21st century.
