Indie Edge Creator Spotlight: W. Maxwell Prince

Article Image 30ae

PREVIEWSworld: Please tell us a bit about yourself!

W. Maxwell Prince: I’m a writer based in Brooklyn. When I’m not writing, I make charts of things. I’m trying to be a better woodworker and to also learn how to braid my daughter’s hair. Both require a level of skill that so far eludes me!

PREVIEWSworld: What are your favorite projects you’ve contributed to over the past decade?

W. Maxwell Prince: I’m particularly proud of our Quarantine Comix collection coming out this September, which collects all of the Ice Cream Man mini-stories we published online during the industry shutdown. Half of the proceeds of the digital stories went to charity to help comic shops, and so do half the proceeds of this floppy version. (I think we can all agree that we prefer a floppy comic to a PDF!)

PREVIEWSworld: What are you currently working on?

W. Maxwell Prince: We’re continuing to unnerve folks with more Ice Cream Man this fall. Plus, look out for an announcement about something clown-related from Image very soon…

PREVIEWSworld: What fun titles are you reading?

W. Maxwell Prince: November Volume 1 by Matt Fraction and Elsa Charretier (JUL190077)—Golly, what a book! Every person involved is doing work at the very tippy top of their craft. It’s not technically “horror,” I don’t think, but there’s a real sense of the horrific here, as The Man at the Center looms darkly… not unlike a certain ice cream vendor.

Infidel by Pornsak Pichetshote and Aaron Campbell (JUL180148)—A haunted house story with a socially relevant (both now and always) hook. One gets the sense that Pornsak has studied closely what makes a horror book really tick. And Aaron’s lines make my stomach uneasy.

This ain’t new, but I’m currently knee-deep in my yearly reread of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman (JUL180774). It’s the guiding star for all my comics writing, and proof that you can (sort of selfishly) pursue your own storytelling interests while also creating something with a lot of generous life!

(USE NOV218559) ICE CREAM MAN TP VOL 01 RAINBOW SPRINKLES
(W) W. Maxwell Prince (A/CA) Martin Morazzo
Chocolate, vanilla, existential horror, addiction, musical fantasy... there's a flavor for everyone's misery. ICE CREAM MAN is a genre-defying comic book series, featuring disparate "one-shot" tales of sorrow, wonder, and redemption. Each installment features its own cast of strange characters, dealing with their own special sundae of suffering. And on the periphery of all of them, like the twinkly music of his colorful truck, is the Ice Cream Man?a weaver of stories, a purveyor of sweet treats. Friend. Foe. God. Demon. The man who with a snap of his fingers?lickety split!?can change the course of your life forever.
Written by W. MAXWELL PRINCE (ONE WEEK IN THE LIBRARY), with art by MART N MORAZZO (SNOWFALL, GREAT PACIFIC). Collects issues 1-4.

ONE WEEK IN THE LIBRARY GN (MR)
(W) W. Maxwell Prince (A) John Amor (CA) Frazer Irving
Welcome to the Library. It's here that every story ever written is catalogued and monitored by a single man, who's begun to notice something strange: the books are rebelling. Image Comics proudly presents this experimental graphic novella from writer W. MAXWELL PRINCE and artist JOHN AMOR, which recounts a troublesome week in the Library via seven short stories-one for each day-that use comics, infographics, prose, and poetry to play with the graphic medium and explore the multivalent world of living narrative.
