Staff Picks (August): The Sons Of El Topo Volume 1 — Cain HC

Alejandro Jodorowsky is really meant for comics. Yes he is known for films but really his work is best suited I think for the comic medium. Each panel, like a frame, is a letter in a language of Icons and Symbols in search of meaning, waiting for translation. The original 1970 cult film El Topo opens with a man in black riding through the vastness of the Mexican desert with a naked child in front of him on the saddle. This child, his son, eventually gets left behind as El Topo searches for and receives religion and enlightenment and the power to perform miracles. In this new sequel series Jodorowsky tells the story of his first born Cain who unable to kill his saintly father sets out to pursue his half brother Abel.

Each panel of this enigmatic and at times infuriating comic unfolds like a stained glass passion play ably brought to life by José Ladrönn familiar for his fantastic work on Inhumans and Incal. As much avant-garde surrealism as it is straight narrative, the 88 year-old Jodorowsky gives us a Western filled with Jungian archetypes and biblical allusions. Will Cain slay his brother or will they join forces to ultimately slay their father? With Jodorowsky’s cult reputation as a poet, artist, and philosopher one thing is certain, there will be significant detours along the way with each page packed with meaning and challenging significance but never boring.
