Staff Picks (August): Sparrowhawk #1

Article Image 3bc5

Sparrowhawk is a 5 part series set in London circa 1851 and tells the story of a Naval Captain’s daughter yanked into another realm by the Faerie Queen and forced into the role of reluctant savior of a world she didn’t fit into all while struggling with issues of self-worth and identity. Part Labyrinth and part Alice in Wonderland, this immersive world is filled with complex characters at once Disney-like and murderous each refreshingly drawn out. A world where our heroine must learn the power of a violence she was carefully protected from back home.

Delilah Dawson has written in the Hellboy and Star Wars universes but it is her original genre redefining work such as the Blud series (Steampunk) and Shadow Series (Supernatural Western) with which she really excels. With Sparrowhawk Dawson brings her knack for unique world building to a realm of Violent Victorian Fairies. Deftly illustrated and brought to life by Matais Basia whose colorful art at times evokes Charles Vess and Craig P. Russell filtered through the haze of looming darkness. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
