Manga publishers and magazines primarily use four different categories similar to American comics genres to label a series’ targeted audience. These are: Shōnen, Shōjo, Seinen, and Josei.
Shōnen (pronounced Show-nen) targets boys and young men and focuses heavily on action and humor.
Shōjo (pronounced Show-joe) targets girls and young women and is usually characterized by emotional exploration and romance.
Seinen (pronounced Seyh-Neen) is intended for older teens and men due to its focus on mature themes and violence, as well as complex political or moral conflict.
Josei (pronounced Joe-seyh) is intended for older teens and women due to its portrayal of the realities of romance, life, and their relationship with sexuality.
Some series can fit into more than one category, but the original magazine it ran in will always determine its official designation!
