Exclusive: Top 100 Best-Selling Graphic Novels of 2017

Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples' Saga Volume 7 from Image Comics was the best-selling graphic novel of 2017. Two more volumes of Vaughan and Staples' award-winning series were in the year's top ten; Volume 1 ranked #2 for the year, and Volume 8, released in December, ranked #9.

In total, Image Comics had eight titles in the top ten. In addition to the three volumes of Saga, Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, and Cliff Rathburn's The Walking Dead Volume 27: The Whisperer War ranked #3; Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang's Paper Girls Volume 1 ranked #4; Marjorie M. Liu and Sana Takeda's Monstress Volume 1 ranked #6; Kirkman, Adlard, and Rathburn's The Walking Dead: Here's Negan, a collection of the stories originally serialized in the Image+ magazine, ranked #8; and Rick Remender and Jerome Opena's Seven to Eternity Volume 1 ranked #10.

DC Entertainment's Batman Volume 1: I Am Gotham, the first volume of the post-DC Universe Rebirth adventures of Batman by Tom King and David Finch, ranked #5.

Rounding out the top ten, Oni Press' Rick and Morty Volume 1, collecting the first issues of Oni's comic book based on the cult Adult Swin series, ranked #7.

Among the premier publishers, Marvel Comics' Wolverine: Old Man Logan, the story arc by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven that served as the inspiration for the acclaimed film Logan, was the publisher's top book for the year at #13. Love Is Love, an anthology celebrating the LGBTQ community created after the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, was IDW Publishing's top book at #27. Finally, Dark Horse Comics' The Legend of Korra Volume 1: Turf Wars Part 1 ranked #47 for the year.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which includes the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from sales made to thousands of comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world.  Additional sales made to online merchants and other specialty stores may be included as well.

Unit and dollar market shares are calculated based upon orders for comic books, graphic novels, and magazines invoiced and shipped to Diamond customers during any given month, which comprises pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable. Please note that comics marked with an asterisk (*) have had their reported quantities reduced due to retailer returnability, and thus may rank lower on the charts than their actual sales would reflect.

About the Diamond Sales Index: The Sales Index of selected monthly Best Seller Charts is presented as a comparative tool for retailers and publishers. It presents Diamond’s monthly sales for individual titles in relation to Diamond’s total sales for the issue of DC Comics' monthly Batman comic book. (Batman is used as the control title – with a value of 100 – because sales of Batman usually remain relatively stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.
