Come Into Me #1

Like all potentially great sci-fi tales, Come Into Me (DEC171182) looks at where we are currently as a culture and takes the next logical, slightly terrifying leap forward.

This new series from Black Mask Comics dares to ask a perfect question for our age of social media: “How much sharing is too much?” When ground-breaking technology allows two people to share one body, it brings a new meaning to “staying connected”.

Can flesh and tech co-exist? Or is sharing not caring? Find out in this wonderfully bizarre melding of The Fly and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Your Black Friend And Other Strangers

One of our staff picks for the month, Your Black Friend And Other Strangers (DEC171793) carries the weight of being considered “an important book.” But beyond that is a vibrant collection of stories set inside the colorful town of New Orleans. Stories that range from eye-opening and culturally informative to sarcastic to biblical.

Ben Passmore’s Your Black Friend is a timely and relevant experience, for sure. It is also 100+ pages told from an alternatively entertaining perspective.

Is This Guy For Real?

Now, Andy, did you hear about this one?

Writer-artist Box Brown’s continues to help readers understand larger than life figures from professional wrestling. Similar to his work on Andre The Giant: Life And Legend, Is This Guy For Real? (DEC171601) explains that what you know about the man in the ring only tells part of the story.

Comedian and performer Andy Kaufman may be known for his role on Taxi, but he’s also infamously known for his antagonistic relationship with Jerry “The King” Lawler, audience members, and other celebrities. The twist: It turns out that Kaufman was actually a gentle, good-natured human being away from the cameras. So, why did he want to make a career of being hated?

Box Boy

I warned you that Indie Edge is the place for unique stories from unconventional creators, and Box Boy (DEC171888) by Tayson Martindale is exactly the type of title I was referring to…

You’ve heard it all before, right? A story about a life-altering journey. A path filled with dangers and surprises. A dark secret that has the fate of the world at stake. All these things are essential to the plot of Box Boy, but the thing that separates it from other tales of adventure is the fact that this stories protagonist is made of cereal boxes and paper rolls.

I didn’t stutter.

What chance does a creature made of sheets and folds have in this cruel world? The answer just might surprise you.

Killing And Dying

Adrian Tomine, “one of the most significant comic book creators in America,” captures both anxiety and hopefulness in this New York Times best-seller.

Killing And Dying (DEC171531) gives us Tomine’s trademark insight into 21st-century life. The writer-artist examines dysfunctional relationships, the frustrations of making art, traveling abroad, and more. All while incorporating various art styles.

This collection of the Optic Nerve stories is tragicomedy at it’s finest. Ideal for those who appreciate the medium and for those who consider themselves students of the craft.
