Director Todd Phillips (The Hangover) has been selected to co-write, and may possibly direct, a movie chronicling the origin of The Joker, according to an article in the August 22 edition of The Hollywood Reporter.

Phillips will collaborate on the screenplay with Scott Silver, best known for his screenplays for 8 Mile and The Fighter. At this time, the story is to be set in early 1980s Gotham City.

According to the report, “The project is intended to be part of a still-developing label for Warners’ DC Entertainment properties that will include projects that could stand apart from the big massive tentpoles that are tied to each other in a shared universe way.”
