Staff Picks (May): Catalyst Prime — Superb #1

Lion Forge’s Free Comic Book Day title The Event sets the stage for many excellent titles by a whirlwind of talented creators, and Superb is a strong addition to their line-up. Starring Kayla Tate, a teenager put in a living situation she didn’t choose, she deals with strained personal relationships while trying to figure out why Cosmosis, a new superhero and social media icon, is hanging around her hometown. The Event changed the world, and with the dust settling everyone is rapidly learning that life isn’t so normal anymore.

The Event invites creators to join the sandbox of Lion Forge’s expanding superhero universe, and Superb brings an all-star cast of talent to play. Fans will recognize Sheena C. Howard as the Eisner Award-winning author of Black Comics: Politics of Race and Representation, and she is joined by David Walker, author of fan-favorite Marvel series Power Man and Iron Fist and Nighthawk. Ray-Anthony Height brings superhero flare to the table, having previously worked on titles such as Spider-Girl and his own Midnight Tiger, and is joined by LeBeau Underwood and Veronica Gandini to round out the interior art excellence.

On top of everything else that makes Superb an engaging story, Lion Forge is teaming up with the National Down Syndrome Society on the portrayal of Cosmosis, while also including educational information on Down Syndrome within each issue.

Summer always seems to be the best season for comic books, with top-notch books arriving in stores every week. Superb is a great example of what makes comic books so fun, and another must-read chapter in Lion Forge’s Catalyst Prime line.
