Collectors, assemble! Hake’s Auctions is readying to open their final premier catalog auction of 2021, anchored by multiple extraordinary pop culture and historical collectibles. With 2,465 lots, Auction #233 is their biggest auction of the year. It opens for bidding on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, and closes on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 2-3.

The undisputed leader in this auction is the Captain America shield hero prop screen-used by Chris Evans in Avengers: Endgame. Constructed by Marvel Studios Prop Master Russell Bobbitt, it is 24” in diameter, approximately 3” deep, and is constructed of high-density foam, with a spun aluminum exterior and hand-crafted leather arm and hand straps on the interior. Between 30 and 40 shields were produced for Endgame, and this example was used for close-up shots in Evans’ hand as it shows the most detail. It has been authenticated by Marvel Studios Prop Master Russell Bobbitt and comes with custom-crafted plaque, as well as an LOA, both signed by Bobbitt.

Nearly 400 CGC-certified comic books will be offered in the auction, with many important entries, like the EC key Tales of Terror Annual #3 (Gaines File Copy) CGC 9.6, which is the only copy in this grade. Almost every Marvel Silver and Bronze Age key is represented, led by Amazing Fantasy #15 CGC 2.0 Signature Series Stan Lee with the first appearance of Spider-Man, and X-Men #1 CGC 6.5, featuring the origin and first appearance of Professor X, Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman, Angel, Beast, and Magneto.

Moving into original art, Hake’s is offering over 200 pieces, among which are five Boris Vallejo published paintings (four of which are covers), including a Heavy Metal magazine cover (April 1984). There’s a huge Vampirella painting by prolific Vampi cover artist Enric, which is one of two in the auction. A 1964 Peanuts daily strip by Charles Schulz with Violet having a one-sided argument with a confused Charlie Brown is in the auction. The final three Mickey Mouse daily strips from the Duvall estate, including a 1931 strip by Floyd Gottfredson and Earl Duvall with Mickey in all panels, will be open for bids soon.

Fresh off their $234,171 sale of the Pokémon Shadowless Uncut Proof Sheet, Hake’s has a new selection of desirable Pokémon items. They include a 1999 Base Set Holographic Uncut Sheet with 100 cards and the sought after ’99 Base Set Charizard 4/102 First Edition Holo CGC 9 card.

Around 250 lots of Star Wars prototypes, test shots, first shots, foreign variants, key production pieces, and more are in the auction. They include a Luke Skywalker 12-back-A AFA 80 with the original double-telescoping lightsaber and the SKU on footer and a Millennium Falcon AFA 80+ factory-sealed in the box, scarcely found in high grade.

Some of the exceptional items in the over 500 political and historical items are an 1864 Abraham Lincoln clasped hands, bearded portrait bandana in framed display, and a Martin Luther King “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” draft with pencil corrections.

The baseball section swings for the fences with material from 1894 to the modern day, featuring Major League, Negro League, and Cuban League pieces. Among them is the 1894 Findlay, Ohio baseball team cabinet photo with Bud Fowler and Grant “Home Run” Johnson, which is the only known example, to the best of Hake’s knowledge. Another is a 1953 Topps Mickey Mantle signed card #82 PSA/DNA Certified Auto 9.

All of the lots will be open for bidding from October 12 to November 2-3 at hakes.com.
