Interview by Troy-Jeffrey Allen

The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath is not as well known as Lovecraft's other works, but it still has all the author's staples: dreamlands, gods, abominable monsters, and cosmic proportions. Which makes it absolutely ripe for a comic book adaptation from Ablaze.

In the following interview, writer Florentino Flórez tells us all about his approach to the comic book version of The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. This is Lovecraft: Unknown Kadath...

Catch us up to speed, what is Lovecraft: Unknown Kadath all about?

Travel in search of a dream city. To reach that place the hero will challenge the gods and fight horrible monsters in strange lands.

So is this more a direct adaptation of Lovecraft’s The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath?

Yes. There have been other adaptations, but Lovecraft's novel had a sense of adventure that we wanted to reflect on, with a more visual approach.

Tell us about Randolph Carter. Why do we focus on him throughout this story, specifically?

That's the way Lovecraft tells the story. We don't know so much about him. He just reacts when somebody (or something) attacks him and he never surrenders. Nothing diverts him from his path.

What drew you to wanting to adapt this story?

I liked the rhythm and the dramatic progression. The succession of different and mysterious landscapes. And the monsters, from little ones till the Other Gods. It's like a video game where everything can happen, and the action never ends.

This story takes place in a dream-like/nightmarish home of Gods. When it comes to visualizing this world, what has the process been like with artists Guillermo Sanna and Jacques Salomon?

They drew different episodes so they knew which monsters and cities they would have to visualize. Sometimes one of them drew a monster that was modified by the other one, in a very organic process. We had some pages with “definitive” designs for the monsters. But on the way we changed some of them. For example, the first version of the shantak birds was closer to Lovecraft's description, with wings and all the stuff. We decided to use a stranger look though. I suggested it to Jacques Salomon, who drew a terrific version.

What is about Lovecraft that keeps people coming back for more?

Mystery, horror, imagination... Those are aspects that we need in our life. As Houllebecq said in his book about Lovecraft, his writing is not from this world. His novels come from another dimension, a fascinating and chilling one.

Looking forward, what can readers expect from LOVECRAFT UNKNOWN KADATH?

First, what they would expect from any Lovecraft adaptation: horror, nameless gods, exotic settings, oily skin monsters... And second, some not-so-usual aspects. A talking cat, a very special King Kuranes, Little Nemo as a guest, lot of action, and two different artists across the episodes, each one with his particular way of seeing the characters and settings. And the color that Jacques Salomon has added is as exotic and weird as possible.
