The Golden Age of comics saw many superheroes created to fight Nazis and the Axis powers. Blazing Skull, created for Timely Comics, was one such character.

He was introduced in Mystic Comics #5 (March 1941) as Mark Todd, a foreign news correspondent assigned to cover the Second Sino-Japanese War. When an artillery bombardment hits the area he’s covering, Mark hides in a cave for safety. Inside, he meets the Skull Men, a peculiar race with burning skulls for heads.

They tell Mark that he has been chosen by destiny to become the champion of freedom and start training him. He gains superhuman strength, becomes immune to fire, can generate flames, has enhanced healing ability, and can make all of his tissue invisible so that he appears to be just a skeleton.

After he finishes training, Mark takes the name Blazing Skull, and starts fighting the forces of evil. He meets the Invaders and helps them against superhumans working for the Axis, saving Sub-Mariner in the process. Blazing Skull works with them again in an Allied airdrop into a Nazi stronghold. Once the war is over, he teams up with Union Jack and the Destroyer to thwart a spy ring.
