Staff Picks (October): Guerillas Omnibus Edition

Article Image 724e

It is no secret to my staff that my comic book guilty pleasure is intelligent gorillas. I cut my teeth on the DC Comics of Julie Schwartz where ape-with-brains covers alternated with covers where either Robin or Flash were dead. Whether it was the latest Flash/Grodd matchup or Hawkman fighting hordes of flying gorillas on the cover I rushed to buy them (I am still bitter about buying Plasticman No. 7 which, despite featuring a hairy ape tying Plas into knots, featured not a single gorilla story inside.) So, it is no surprise that I was attracted to Brahm Revel’s Jane Goodall meets Platoon epic Guerillas.

From beginning to end this was a fantastic series but with this new Omnibus Edition from Oni you can read it in a single sitting and really let the full weight of the allusions to Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, and Wells' Island of Doctor Moreau wash over you. Revel’s bold kinetic black & white lines and crisp writing match perfectly the stories frenetic pace and give the books ever smoking chimps a surprising range of emotions.

Guerillas answers once and for all, “What if, instead of writing Animal Farm, George Orwell made the world’s greatest Zippo Lighter commercial?”
