Staff Picks (October): Creepy Creations Volume 1 HC

Article Image 6b60

A contemporary of Basil Wolverton and Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, Ken Reid may not be familiar to many Americans but his bizarre , grotesque, and hilariously perverse drawings are important and influential contributions to both underground and outsider art and many British creators including Neil Gaiman who noted that Ken Reid was, “one of my very favourite UK comics artists, from the day I discovered his strips Queen of the Seas and The Nervs in Smash!, even if I didn’t know his name. ”

Reid deserves greater recognition this side of the Atlantic and this Rebellion collection is a great place to start. His style while often reminiscent and just as humorous as Wolverton, also contains a more dark and unsettling element that recalls the works of Hannes Bok and charcoal drawings of Odilon Redon.

One can’t help but look at a one of his “creations” like The Green Groper and see Harvey Weinstein and think to yourself, “The horror, the horror…”
