American Mythology Attractive To All-Ages

You may have wondered why some brands come, and some brands go. Why have Blondie and Barney Google faded from the public eye, but characters like Casper and Rocky and Bullwinkle get published by American Mythology? What’s the answer, you say? It’s because that loveable ghost, squirrel, and moose are suited to all-ages adventures. Those characters repeatedly show that they appeal to people regardless of their age, and this is especially helpful when parents look to guide their kids toward material that they themselves look forward to reading.

It was a topic of conversation when we ran into writers Todd Livingston and S.A. Check at Baltimore Con. Both were on hand at the American Mythology booth, and before long we were dragging both over to the PREVIEWSworld corner of the universe so that both could talk about their craft, and the logic behind their passion.

“It’s something that parents trust. It’s a brand that they trust,” Todd Livingston offered, in regards to his gig on Rocky & Bullwinkle. “The kids can enjoy them, and then the parents can read them, and enjoy them as well. Particularly Rocky & Bullwinkle, it’s not a kid’s book. It’s an all-ages book.”

Writer S.A. Check concurred. Material that’s friendly to multiple audiences is an overall goal for books like Rocky & Bullwinkle and Casper, but brand identity plays just as crucial a role in the materials being published.

“Whatever brand we (American Mythology) go, we try to stay true to the brand,” he said. “I think some of the characters that we’re dealing with here…these are legacy characters that have been around not only for one generation, but for multi-generations. So I really think it promotes not only a younger person to pick up and read the book, but it’s for the whole family to enjoy.”
