Video Game Month: Retro Games Play On As Comics

Nostalgia is a powerful thing for gamers and for those who grew up in arcades or in front of an 8-bit screen, there’s normally fond memories attached to those classic games. From Pac-Man and Centipede, to Mario and Megaman – retro games are making a comeback in a huge way, and some are even continuing their stories in comics!

In celebration of Video Game Month, PREVIEWSworld has put together a list of five retro game titles that have made their way to comics. You can find these titles and more comics, graphic novels, and toys at your local comic shop.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

A landmark video game in the history of NintendoThe Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is celebrating twenty-five years of critical and commercial success as Viz Media has recollected the long out of print manga tie-in, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (MAR151495). Written and illustrated by the renowned Shotaro Ishinomori, this graphic novel fills in the story beyond the screen and gives more depth to Link, Zelda, Ganon, and the beloved classic Super Nintendo game.

Super Mario Adventures

Since its debut in Nintendo Power magazine in 1992, fans have been clamoring for a collection of the Kentaro Takekuma manga following the zany exploits of The Mario Brothers, Princess Peach, Bower, and all their Toadstool Kingdom friends. Atari Classics Swordquest

Dynamite Entertainment is digging into the vault as the classic Swordquest mini-comics are collected for the first time ever. Originally packaged with the Atari cartridge of their namesake title, fans can now own the complete Atari Classics Swordquest (JUN171521). Created by comic book legends Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, George Perez, and Dick Giordano, fans of classic comic and classic video games will love the beautifully remastered fantasy adventure of siblings Torr and Tarra as they set off on a quest across four worlds to recover the mystical Sword of Ultimate Sorcery!

Centipede #1

Dynamite Entertainment is giving the classic Atari game Centipede a makeover, as writer Max Bemis and artist Eoin Marron ratchet up the horror by casting the Centipede as a monster from beyond the stars hell-bent on destroying Earth in Centipede #1 (MAY171386). The world has been destroyed by this terrifying star beast and only one person remains on earth. As the lone survivor of this apocalypse, Dale is after only one thing – revenge. It’s man versus monster in this chilling reboot of the classic video game. Issue #2 (JUN171512) and Issue #3 (JUL171696) of Centipede are also available.
