Movie Month: Read Before Viewing These Summer Blockbusters

Summer is the time when everyone is out of school, taking it easy, and looking for someplace to escape the heat. Many escape to their local movie house, where for an hour or two they can escape the summer sun and be transported to another place… someplace exciting, dangerous or absolutely fun. The movies are the ultimate escape, and we’ve got our collective eye on 2017’s most anticipated offerings!

So to celebrate Movie Month in the May PREVIEWS, here are some trade paperbacks you should read before heading to the theater!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May 5th, 2017)

This year’s comic book movie release to coincide with Free Comic Book Day (Saturday, May 6th) is the long-awaited sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, the aptly numbered Vol. 2(keeping with the mix tape angle introduced in the first film). We’ve already seen an abundance of licensed items being offered for this Marvel Cinematic Universe release, and this issue is no exceptions! Get ready for the next installment of Guardians of the Galaxy with an awesome mix of both classic and new stories that are perfect for getting you back in the groove to see Volume 2 in theaters. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude Vol. 2 (DEC161095brings the team of Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot back together with a few new additions like Yondu and Mantis.

Alien: Covenant (May 19th, 2017)

Since he wrote and directed the Alien prequel, Prometheus, Ridley Scott has gotten back into the Alien movie business with the first in what has been rumored to be a trilogy of films, Alien Covenant. Set around the same time as Prometheus, Alien Covenant follows a group of colonists on a mission to find a new world for human expansion. Of course, somebody (or something) got there first. Learn more about the terror that befell the doomed crew lead by engineer Derrick Russell in the Dark Horse Comics tie-in mini-series Aliens Fire and Stone (JAN150169). Connecting the worlds of Aliens and Prometheus, Fire and Stone follows a desperate group of survivors as they evade the vicious xenomorphs and try to stay alive on a rickety mining vessel.

Wonder Woman (June 2nd, 2017)

Ask anyone who saw Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and they’ll most likely tell you their favorite part of the film was Wonder Woman’s entry into the battle with Doomsday and her utter joy in combat. This summer, Gal Gadot returns as Wonder Woman, in a film set during World War 1. With Star Trek’sChris Pine as her love interest, Steve Trevor, this one looks like it’s going to be an epic origin story for Diana. Travel back to Paradise Island as writer and artist Renae De Liz explores the Amazonian Princesses’ past in The Legend of Wonder Woman (AUG160332). Follow Diana’s rise through the world of the Amazon’s, her introduction to Steve Trevor and the World of Men, and her journey into the battles of World War II.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7th, 2017)

Audiences went wild when Spider-Man made his entrance during the airport battle in 2016’s Civil War. This was the first evidence of the new agreement between Spider-Man movie license holder Sony, and Marvel Studios, to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This July, we get the big payoff from the two studios’ decision to work together: Spider-Man: Homecoming. It can’t be that hard to juggle high school with a crime fighting career, but Peter Parker soon finds out that he may not be up to the challenge in Spidey Vol. 1: First Day (MAY160932). The young Spider-Man must go up against a formidable rogues’ gallery including Doctor Octopus, Sandman, and of course the Vulture. Peter might just be in over his head this time, but that won’t stop this friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!

War for the Planet of the Apes (July 14th, 2017)

The third entry in the modern Planet of the Apes reboot finds Caesar and his tribe at odds with the last remnants of humanity, led by Woody Harrelson. Explore how humanity has come to this with a look back at the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Vol. 1 (SEP151114). Officially set between Dawn and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, this comic details the fall of humanity and the rise of Caesar with his unstoppable troop of apes while Malcolm combs the globe looking for a cure to the plague that is slowly killing his wife.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (July 21st, 2017)

 

Luc Besson’s (The Fifth Element, The Professional, Lucy) is adapting the world renowned French graphic novel series Valerian in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. This long running French series never saw English acclaim but Cinebook is publishing an all new collection of materials never before translated in Valerian Complete Collection Vol. 1 (JAN178426). Explore the galaxy alongside Valerian and Laureline in these new to English audiences stories like Bad Dreams, The City of Shifting Waters, and The Empire of a Thousand Planets.

Atomic Blonde (July 28th, 2017)

Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road, Prometheus) stars in this film adaptation of the graphic novel The Coldest City (JAN121214)and its prequel, The Coldest Winter, published by Oni Press. Antony Johnston’s MI6 superspy Lorraine Broughton travels to Berlin in 1989, right before the Wall – and Communism – will fall. Tasked with tracking down the killer of an undercover spy who had a list of every espionage agent working in Berlin, Lorraine must recover the information before any of the other agents are caught and killed.

The Dark Tower (August 4th, 2017)

Stephen King’s epic dark fantasy comes to the big screen this year, starring Idris Elba (Pacific Rim) as the Gunslinger Roland Deschain, and Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar) as the “Man in Black”. Travel back to the first time the Gunslinger and Man in Black tangled with Marvel’s adaptation of The Gunslinger Born (SEP072167). An in depth exploration of The Dark Towers many worlds, this comic series goes beyond the novels and delves into the dark origins of Gunslinger Roland Deschain.
