The early 1990s featured a bunch of things that never quite aged well – Pogs, boy bands, acid-wash denim, “Rico Suave,” to name a few. Fortunately, some things have remained remarkably contemporary, including one Squirrel Girl, who debuted in January 1992 in a story by Steve Ditko and Will Murray.

Doreen Green made her first appearance in the Marvel Super-Heroes Winter Special, during which she tried to impress Iron Man and ended up rescuing him from the clutches of Doctor Doom with the help of her squirrel army. She followed up on that by joining the Great Lakes Avengers, later known as the Great Lakes X-Men and then the Great Lakes Initiative. She made periodic appearances throughout the late 1990s and into the early 2000s, showing up in major storylines such as Civil War and Secret Invasion.

Squirrel Girl’s powers are – obviously – squirrel-based. Her lengthy prehensile squirrel tail gives her an advantage in battle, as does her enhanced agility and jumping abilities. She also notably has the ability to communicate with squirrels themselves, and can speak their language. She’s had a number of squirrel companions over the years, the two most notable being Monkey Joe and Tippy-Toe.

After many years of relative obscurity, she burst back into the comic scene a couple of years ago with the recent Unbeatable Squirrel Girl series. Doreen’s quirky personality shines through in the series, which has received critical praise and has run in an ongoing fashion since it arrived in 2015. Though Doreen Green has never been quite on the level of Iron Man or Captain America, she’s clearly established a strong fanbase and a foothold in Marvel Comics over the last 25 years, and it looks like the best is still yet to come.
