Staff Picks (December): Highlander — The American Dream #1

Article Image 49e1

The concept of the 1986 movie Highlander is awesome. Characters Conner McLeod (Christopher Lambert) and Ramirez (Sean Connery) are immortal. They can only die in a duel where another immortal lops off their head. Until that time they are free to live through the ages and chop off the heads of other immortals and take their power. The movie even had a seriously nasty villain named “The Kurgan” played by Clancy Brown whom comic fans will recognize as the voice of Lex Luthor in Superman the Animated Series and Justice League.

The only problem I have with the first Highlander is the final battle. On a rooftop in NYC Conner McLeod defeats the Kurgan and takes his head making Conner the last living immortal and very little room for a sequel. Popularity demanded it and despite continuity we got sequels, a TV show, and a cartoon, but I can’t hate on this movie. I love this movie. How can anyone hate on a movie with rocking soundtrack from Queen that screams the 90s? This movie, like Freddie Mercury, is immortal.

But the good times don’t always last. It’s been a long time since the last Highlander movie and without anything new to look forward to it has been hard on the fans. IDW is looking to fill that void and will finally be giving us what we’ve been waiting for.

Scribe Brian Ruckley (Rogue Trooper) will be exploring the character of Conner McLeod more closely than we’ve ever had a chance to before. In the movies we only saw a sliver of his life through flashbacks. In the new comic we’ll get a chance to expand on that and explore his life from the American Civil War and on towards the events of the first movie in 1986.

If you only pick up one comic in February, “the one” to pick up is Highlander from IDW!
