Staff Picks

Staff Pick (August 10): Beasts Of Burden / Hellboy Staff Pick (August 10): Beasts Of Burden / Hellboy
Recommended by Jim Kuhoric
On the surface, you may ask yourself exactly how a pack of plucky occult investigating dogs (and one cat) could partner with a hell-spawned demon that devours pancakes instead of souls. You’d be right to ask it. But those of us familiar with Dark Horse Comics’ Hellboy and Beasts of Burden comics know that the two go together like Shaggy and Scooby or peanut butter and Elvis.

Staff Pick (August 10): Hereville — How Mirka Got Her Sword GN Staff Pick (August 10): Hereville — How Mirka Got Her Sword GN
Recommended by Kate Henning
Witches, trolls, talking pigs, and knitting lessons — yup, Hereville brings the goods. With its heroine growing up in a blended family, an orthodox Jewish community, and a rich fantasy world, there are a few different gimmicks this book could lean on, but Deutsch neatly balances these elements rather than belaboring them, making for a fun and endearing story.

Staff Pick (August 10): Louis — Night Salad HC Staff Pick (August 10): Louis — Night Salad HC
Recommended by Sarah Martinez
In the tradition of Little Nemo, the Scotland-based creative team of John Chalmers and Sandra Marrs have brought forth a fanciful adventure story. Louis, the little hero from previous Metaphrog titles, returns in a new stand-alone story perfect for young readers and the young at heart.

Staff Pick (August 10): Pang The Wandering Shaolin Monk Volume 1 HC Staff Pick (August 10): Pang The Wandering Shaolin Monk Volume 1 HC
Recommended by Sarah Martinez
Creator Ben Costa presents a young monk during a time of war and great social upheaval in not-so-ancient China. The reader follows Pang through the battle that destroys his temple and into the first city he’s ever seen where he meets the first girl who’s ever spoken to him.

Staff Pick (August 10): PS238 #48 Staff Pick (August 10): PS238 #48
Recommended by Robert Randle
A secret primary school for super powered children, it chronicled the awkward exploits of young Tyler, the son of Earth’s two most powerful superheroes who, much to his parents' chagrin, has yet to exhibit powers of his own.

Staff Pick (August 10): Warlord Of Mars #1 Staff Pick (August 10): Warlord Of Mars #1
Recommended by Tim Lenaghan
It’s evident from the very beginning of the issue that Nelson is dedicated to making John Carter a fully-realized character for both new and old readers alike. Nelson grounds the story in its period setting, encapsulating the landscape of the post-Civil War United States, while simultaneously making Carter the timeless character that Burroughs depicted in his novels.

Staff Pick (August 10): Xenozoic: The Complete Collection TP Staff Pick (August 10): Xenozoic: The Complete Collection TP
Recommended by Steve Leaf
Dinosaurs! What young boy doesn’t love dinosaurs — and what adolescent boy doesn’t like beautiful women? In my days it was 1,000,000 Years BC and When Dinosaurs Ruled with Raquel Welch and Julie Edge. Thanks to Xenozoic and its heroine Hannah Dundee I get to reminisce and enjoy stories that are hearken back to those long ago days.

Staff Pick (July 10): Billy The Kid’s Old Timey Oddities And The Ghastly Fiend Of London #1 Staff Pick (July 10): Billy The Kid’s Old Timey Oddities And The Ghastly Fiend Of London #1
Recommended by Jim Kuhoric
Kyle Hotz writes and illustrates the new tale of the misfits that inhabit Billy’s traveling show and their run-in with the legendary murderer Jack the Ripper. Coming direct from the uniquely mutated freakish mind of Powell, you can bet this book will be chock full of murderously deranged black hearted humor.

Staff Pick (July 10): Bram Stoker’s Death Ship TP Staff Pick (July 10): Bram Stoker’s Death Ship TP
Recommended by Robert Randle
Stuart Sayger’s art style will resonate with fans of comic greats such as Kevin O’Neill, Bernie Wrightson, Guy Davis, and Gary Gianni, and he utilizes a muted pallet and visceral rendering to plunge the reader head first into the dolorous yet suspenseful story. A harrowing tale of fear and isolation!

Staff Pick (July 10): Destroy All Movies!!!: The Complete Guide To Punks On Film Staff Pick (July 10): Destroy All Movies!!!: The Complete Guide To Punks On Film
Recommended by Sarah Martinez
Movie buffs, trivia masters, and the punk-conscious all need this book. It’s a labor of love spanning the punk scene as represented in film from 1974 to 1999. Over 600 pages for every flick that has ever had a punk wander across the screen. Each movie gets its own multi-paragraph write-up in a fun cross between a review, a film critique, and an internet rant.

Staff Pick (July 10): The Anthology Project Volume 1 HC Staff Pick (July 10): The Anthology Project Volume 1 HC
Recommended by Sarah Martinez
This collection has a hand-picked selection of a little bit of everything: wordless high-adventure epics, neurotic cats, an old west adaptation of "A Christmas Carol," and one jillion unicorns. Coupled with watercolor, traditional pen and ink, or even vector art, these are all outstanding examples of independently-produced polished sequential art.

Staff Pick (July 10): The Avengers A Celebration 50 Years Of A Television Classic HC Staff Pick (July 10): The Avengers A Celebration 50 Years Of A Television Classic HC
Recommended by Steve Leaf
With access to material previously unavailable, this book covers the shows history from Ian Hendry as David Keel, the introduction of John Steed, and, years later, the series' return in The New Avengers. As a fan of the show the moment it hit US television, this book is a fitting tribute to the series.

Collecting the first seven issues of Vampirella Magazine! While initially starting out as its hostess, Vampirella soon became the sexiest vampire this side of a Hammer horror film. The last daughter of Drakulon soon went from host to participant in her own adventures written by the legendary Archie Goodwin and illustrated by Jose Gonzales.

Recommended by Jim Kuhoric
Kolchak the Night Strangler was the second movie to be released and was written by one of the most creative minds of 20th century. Richard Matheson, who wrote such notable novels as I am Legend and What Dreams May Come, was responsible for the screenplay which sent Carl Kolchak into the under-city catacombs beneath Seattle in search of a monstrous killer.

Staff Pick (June 10): The Extraordinary Adventures Of Adéle Blanc-Sec HC Staff Pick (June 10): The Extraordinary Adventures Of Adéle Blanc-Sec HC
Recommended by Sarah Martinez
Unlike Tardi’s more dramatic comics centered on World War I itself, Adele Blanc-Sec was written tongue-in-cheek with a moody protagonist and a flare for the brass-and-goggles brand of science fiction. A pterodactyl attacks pre-World War I Paris and meets its match when Adele Blanc-Sec — a novelist and woman of action — confronts it on the rooftops. How hardcore is that?
