Staff Pick (July 10): The Anthology Project Volume 1 HC
The Anthology Project
As a general rule, I distrust anthologies. There's always something included that underwhelms or disappoints. Perhaps some artist the editor knew or a story included just to fill in the page count.
I'm thrilled to have found an anthology with a miraculously strong-willed editor. Within The Anthology Project, every last one of the 15 artists' stories stand alone as a beautifully and skillfully crafted short story. The unifying theme for this book appears to be Quality Canadian Artist Storytellers, which if somewhat vague, is still fine by me.
This collection has a hand-picked selection of a little bit of everything: wordless high-adventure epics, neurotic cats, an old west adaptation of "A Christmas Carol," and one jillion unicorns. Coupled with watercolor, traditional pen and ink, or even vector art, these are all outstanding examples of independently-produced polished sequential art.
And then there’s the format. That’s really what hooked me in the first place. The hardback book has a textured cover, a delicate gold foil logo, high-gloss interior pages, and stitched binding. The entire product wowed me from the cover to the content.
