In the fall of 1946 Timely Comics, the predecessor to Marvel, introduced The All-Winners Squad in All Winners Comics #19. The team consisted of Captain America and then-sidekick Bucky Barnes, the Human Torch (Jim Hammond) and sidekick Toro, the Sub-Mariner, the patriotic Miss America, and speedster the Whizzer.
Timely’s first superhero team was introduced 75 years ago in an adventure, titled “The Crime of the Ages.” Written by Batman co-creator Bill Finger, the team fought a Nazi spy known as Isbisa in the 43-page story.
Otto Binder, who would go on to co-create Supergirl, penned the next story, “Menace from the Future World.” Another 43-pager, this one pitted the team against Madame Death and the time-traveling Future Man.
At a time when superhero teams were not as well established with readers, The All-Winners Squad would only have a few appearances during the Golden Age. They did see a resurgence in popularity when Marvel reprinted their stories in the 1960s.
