Death Disappears In The Clone Conspiracy

by Vince Brusio

The buzz around the August issue of Marvel PREVIEWS has been, of course, The Clone Conspiracy #1 (AUG160753) from writer Dan Slott and artist Jim Cheung. It’s the Gem of the Month for PREVIEWS readers, and that means all eyes are on this book to see where it goes, and the ramifications it will have for the Marvel Universe. To give us an idea on how things get underway with this series — subtitled “Dead No More” — Clone Conspiracy Associate Editor Devin Lewis answered a few questions for us in this PREVIEWSworld Exclusive interview.

The Clone Conspiracy #1 (AUG160753) is in comic shops October 12.

Article Image b29fPREVIEWSworld: How was the idea pitched for The Clone Conspiracy (AUG160753)? Was the idea changed at all from its original formulation? Or did the rubber meet the road from the beginning sentence?

Devin Lewis: One of Dan’s strengths is bringing back classic characters from Spidey-Lore and incorporating them into his ongoing Spider-Man story, and this time is no different. Long-time readers will remember the Spider-Island arc and the central role the Jackal played in that story. Dan’s been planning The Clone Conspiracy since then, and that’s dozens of issues of comics, for those of you keeping score at home.

This really is the Jackal’s master plan in every sense of the word. Everything since Spider-Island has been building to this, and Dan’s taken the time throughout his run to make sure that all of the groundwork has been properly laid, and the pieces are on the board and in-play. Now all that remains is waiting to see how they all come together. This is one Spidey fans will be talking about for years!

PREVIEWSworld: The Jackal is back from the dead. Cheers! But with new readers constantly coming into the Spider-man universe, there may be some fans that are unfamiliar with the character. How will this story reflect on the Jackal's past sins for those new readers? Or is there no time to look backwards because the gravitational pull of danger makes anything else a useless distraction?

Devin Lewis: Well, Spider-Man is certainly in danger, that much is for certain! Very happy to report, too, that the Jackal’s plan, by definition, is new-reader friendly! People are coming back from the dead – but how that affects Spider-Man, his supporting cast, and even those people themselves is the very story Dan’s weaving here.

PREVIEWSworld: What is it about The Jackal that makes him such a formidable foe for Spider-Man? What's the deal with his army that now has the Wallcrawler marked for death?

Devin Lewis: Since his introduction, The Jackal has had a unique relationship with Spider-Man, as he’s one of those villains who attacks Peter Parker more than he attacks Peter’s wall-crawling alter-ego. For the Jackal, his fight with Spider-Man has been personal from the very beginning. He harbors a lot of resentment, a lot of jealousy, and a lot of raw anger, really, for Peter Parker – and that’s really being brought to the fore in Dan’s story. BUT! What makes this latest plan the Jackal has hatched so devious is that he’s HELPING people – his company, NEW U, has developed groundbreaking new medicines, grown new limbs and organs for people and, yes, even beaten DEATH ITSELF! That kind of ideological battle is going to shake Peter Parker to his very core.

As for his army and THEIR goals… you’re just going to have to keep reading!

PREVIEWSworld: Have you had the chance to look at advanced pages? What do Dan Slott and Jim Cheung bring to the table on this new project? How has their chemistry made this story combustible?

Devin Lewis: Jim is hard at work and has drawn an absolutely STUNNING story so far. This is some of the best comic art I’ve seen in my career, and he and Dan have both cooked up a LOT of surprises for fans!

PREVIEWSworld: If you could offer anything as a teaser that would make social media light up like a Christmas tree, what would you bang out from behind the keyboard?

Devin Lewis: Anything else would be a spoiler, but with the dead coming back to life nothing is off the table!
