Joëlle Jones Again Axes The Arrogant in Lady Killer 2

by Vince Brusio

What’s it like to play the role of a psychopath? Is there deep inside you the urge to change your name to Dexter? Well, what if you instead adopted the gender of a female persuasion? What if your clinical expertise in murder was cloaked in clothing that made you look like a housewife? What if instead of being sugar and spice she was arsenic and cyanide? Put such a meal in a microwave and nuke it, and you’ll find yourself pulling out the freshly cooked Lady Killer 2 #1 (JUN160017) from Joëlle Jones. Head-over-heels that Dark Horse Comics has put out yet another one of his tales of terror that hits comics shops this August, the writer/artist gave us a few moments to inquire about her latest swipe at the jugular.

Lady Killer 2 #1 (JUN160017) is in comic shops August 3.

Article Image 30aaPREVIEWSworld: For those not familiar with Lady Killer, tell us the premise of the story, and how you feel about the property now that the first story arc has been completed.

Joëlle Jones: It's basically the story of a 1960's housewife that leads a double life as a contract killer. When I started the first series I was only writing it to entertain myself and have some fun, I had no idea that people would react to it the way they have, which was overwhelmingly positive. I'm currently in the middle of the next series and I couldn't be happier to return to this book!

PREVIEWSworld: As this is the second Lady Killer series, what will be the same, and what will be different with this new book?

Joëlle Jones: The same characters will all be there but I have moved the family across the country to a new setting in Cocoa Beach Florida. The first series was more of a snapshot so I wanted this arc to dig a little deeper into the characters’ lives and motivations, and I may even up the body count.

PREVIEWSworld: How do you decide on the method of execution for the victims? Do you just spin the wheel, or is there more to deciding who gets the claw hammer versus who gets the sharp butcher knife?

Joëlle Jones: I never wanted my main character Josie to use guns. I didn't make that as a political decision, it was more of an artistic one. I find that drawing gunfights gets incredibly boring after a while, and I just wanted to do something different. I also admire a woman that can make the most of any given situation, even if that means a hammer to the back of the head, or a pair of knitting needle through the eye.

PREVIEWSworld: How does the book make you push the envelope? Or is it a completely different experience for you, as you're "cutting" loose for the first time?

Joëlle Jones: I'm not trying to be edgy or impress anyone, I just want to make a book that I would love to read. If I'm not tickled by a scene that I wrote I scrap it. Same for drawing, if I write a scene that I'm not crazy excited to draw I rewrite the scene. I just want to have a good time.

PREVIEWSworld: What can you tell us that lets us peek behind the curtain for this next book? What could you tell us that would stop traffic, and make people run out to put Lady Killer on their pull list?

Joëlle Jones: I am having a blast with this second series! I am drawing things that I have always wanted to, and I feel like the story overall has a lot more depth to it, plus I'm digging into past lives, writing new exciting characters, and some super fun murder montages!
