Staff Picks (July): The Art of Atari

Like many people in my generation, the first videogame console that I ever laid my eyes upon was an Atari 2600. Though the company had other game consoles after the 2600, this is usually the system that springs to mind when anyone mentions the name Atari. The graphics, sounds, woodgrain hardware, and even the logo based on Mount Fuji are iconic.

In the 80’s the primitive graphics of the day didn’t matter. How the game played and how you imagined the game characters looked was king. Imagination was at the very heart of every Atari game. A simple cursor could be a dangerous foe in Yar’s Revenge while a simple arrow could be a brave star fighter in Asteroids surrounded by death at every turn.

Today we are spoiled for information on each new game before it hits the market. We can read online reviews, watch trailers, and in some cases even watch someone play the game on YouTube before it is released to the public.

The Art of Atari by Dynamite Entertainment details how artists crafted some of the most creative artwork to grace a game cartridge in the history of the industry. In this title, authors Robert V. Conte and Tim Lapetino provide us with an insider look into their creative processes and influences of some of Atari’s most accomplished artists such as Hiro Kimura (Berzerk, Galaxian, Mario Bros.), Cliff Spohn (Air-Sea Battle, Breakout, Video Chess), and others.

With Atari the box art played a key part in a buyer’s decision process. Be sure to pick up this piece of videogame history from Dynamite Entertainment this October.
