Felicity Smoak was a popular character on the Arrow TV show, first as the computer genius and expert hacker that aided Green Arrow. She grew into a leadership role within the team and became romantically involved with Oliver Queen. Long before Felicity had eyes for Oliver on the small screen, she had a complicated relationship with Firestorm in comics.

She was created by Gerry Conway and Rafael Kayanan, who introduced her 40 years ago in The Fury of Firestorm #23 (May 1984). Felicity was the supervisor of a New York computer software firm who encountered Firestorm while he was fighting a villain. During the course of the battle, Firestorm magnetized and unintentionally destroyed the computers storing the software programs that were in development. He caused millions of dollars in damage, prompting a furious Felicity to confront Firestorm and threaten him with a lawsuit.

Felicity made several more appearances in Firestorm comics, often pointing out that his actions caused collateral damage and cost civilians dearly. After one particularly heated exchange, Firestorm angrily used his power to transform molecules to turn her clothes into soap bubbles. She was so angry at being embarrassed in public, that Felicity filed a lawsuit against him.

Their contentious relationship hit a curveball when Felicity started dating Ronnie Raymond’s father, Ed. Of course, she had no idea that Ronnie was Firestorm, putting him in a complicated situation. Eventually, Felicity and Ed got married, and she discovered that her new stepson was one-half of Firestorm. Fortunately, Felicity’s dislike of Firestorm had lessened with the passage of time and learning more about his attempts to help people. She became supportive of Ronnie and Firestorm, though she would remind him to be responsible with how he used his powers.
